PHOENIX, AZ – Two people, including a Phoenix police officer, were killed as the result of a Monday night crash north of downtown.

According to a report by ABC 15, the accident happened at about 10:30 p.m. in the area of Cave Creek Road and Greenway Parkway.

Witnesses say an eastbound vehicle ran through the red light at the intersection and collided with the southbound police cruiser.

The driver in the eastbound car, 31-year-old Christopher Castro, died from his injuries at the scene. The officer was extricated from his vehicle and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Investigators believe speed and impairment played a role in the fatal crash.
